State Cross Country Meet

The 2017 boys and girl state cross country meet occurred on Oct. 28 in Valley City. This was the meet to prove to themselves after all the hard work that they put in throughout the entire season. All the runners were ready to give it their all to come out as the best in the state.

The Girls Cross Country team placed 6th at state. The girls were prepared to do their best and show the state what they could do. At the EDC meet the girls team came behind West Fargo High School and West Fargo Sheyenne. Their goal at state was to beat both teams, which they did. As State is the last meet of the season it is also the last high school meet for seniors. Ellie Hammes, Abbi Grieger, and Anna Erickson all scored points for the team at state. In an interview with Anna Erickson she said that is was bitter-sweet to end her high school cross country career. Congratulations to the entire girls team, and they hope to keep improving over the offseason.

This season Junior boys cross country runner Alex Luz placed 3rd with a time of 16:11.61 at the State cross country meet. After collapsing within reach of the finish line at last year’s meet he was fired up and looking to win.

Luz said prior to the race was the most nervous he had been all season, but he was ready to run. The meet was delayed two hours which also messed with Alex a bit, but once he got to the starting line he knew it was time to go and finish his junior season strong. At the start of the race he was in the top group with one runner ahead of him, Luz knew that he would be his toughest opponent throughout the race. Towards the middle of the race Luz knew he had to pick it up if he wa going to win so he turned it up a notch. He gave it all he had to finish the race and ended in 3rd place out of over 200 runners from across the state.

Overall the boys finished in 5th place with Caleb Yokom finishing 16th and Bridger Scraper in 24th. Only a few senior runners are leaving so the team should stay relatively the same.
