Girls basketball drops tough one to Davies

Coming off a tough stretch of the season, the Fargo North girls basketball team was looking to right the ship with a win against Fargo Davies on Tuesday. North (1-11) had faced conference leaders in West Fargo Sheyenne and Devils Lake in the two games prior to the tilt at Davies, and a win would provide the spark needed to turn the year around.

Seniors Maddy England and Sophie Cody have paced the Spartans in scoring to this point in the season, averaging around 15 and 11 points per game respectively, but other girls such as Juniors Jennie Sem and Seniors Morgan Kommer, Kaylee Leabo, and Anna Benson have contributed in a multitude of other ways.

Despite a win against Fargo South the game before, Davies (6-7) was coming off a similarly tough stretch of games, dropping contests to Devils Lake and Sheyenne, as well as West Fargo. Alyssa Paper has led the Eagles in scoring so far this season.

North started the game in a bit of a hole, constantly at a 10 point deficit for the majority of the first half. However, a couple of strategic timeouts by head coach Brian Kaluza got the team re-focused and they battled back to cut Davies’ lead in half by halftime. As the second half began, North clawed even closer, cutting the lead to 35-33 at one point. But the Eagles pulled away from that point on, with the final score ending up 55-33.

Despite the tough loss, the season must go on, and North’s next game is on Friday, Jan. 25 against Grand Forks Central at the Spartandome.
