Frozen Two Melts the Hearts of Viewers
January 29, 2020
Frozen 2 hit theaters Nov. 22 generating over $350 million globally on its premiere date. This much awaited sequel follows the beloved characters from the original film that came out in 2013. The movie picks up right where the first one left off with Arendelle safe and sound, ruled by their queen, Elsa, who is no longer hiding from the public eye. Kristoff and Anna are in love, Prince Hans is gone, and Olaf is a permanent talking snowman; it seems like these characters have finally found some peace.
Prior to seeing our happy kingdom we see a flashback to when Anna and Elsa were children, the flashback serves to fill some gaps about the sisters’ parents and tell us more about the land of Arendelle. Specifically about an enchanted forest that was closed off due to mysterious circumstances. Flash forward to the present and Elsa is hearing voices that she believes are coming from the forest which sends all of our favorite characters on a whimsical journey to find out what this forest is all about.
While this movie is cute it didn’t compare to the original film at all. Now, this may be because I am no longer 11, and enjoy watching movies with a little more intellect to them. However, I felt as though Disney was trying too hard to live up to the original, which held expectations that were just too high to meet. The songs were cute, but not as catchy as some of the originals like, ‘Do you want to Build a Snowman’ or ‘Let it Go’. Now, while the songs weren’t as catchy that’s not to say they were bad. It’s been weeks since I saw the film and some of the songs like “Into the Unknown” and “Some Things Never Change” are still stuck in my head.
The film may not have been as good as the original, but it was still special in its own way. I found this movie to be hilarious with tons of pokes at the first film that really made it feel fit for both young and older audiences. My favorite part was the song they gave Jonathan Groff called “Lost in the Woods,” which is set up like an 80s ballad and was so fun to see and hear, and I mean Jonathan Groff is amazing.
I really enjoyed revisiting these beloved characters, and hearing Idina Menzel and Jonathon Groff sing again. However, I still think the original Frozen will always have a special place in my heart that cannot be replaced by any new ideas Disney throws out for this story. Four out of five Spartan heads from me.
