Small restaurants struggling due to the COVID 19 outbreak
By Ella Karlins
Many small restaurants and businesses are struggling after having to shut down because of the new coronavirus, COVID-19. Although we have all been instructed to stay home, there are still a couple ways to help them out during this time.
People can help by ordering takeout from these restaurants during this time instead of going to major fast food places or getting take out from major restaurant corporations. Restaurant delivery services are offering non-contact delivery, meaning you can still order food, but to continue quarantine and social distancing, the delivery person will leave the food on your front door to avoid contact with other people. Even though delivery services are still in business, many people are still opting to order from large scale restaurants that are not at as big a risk for closure during this time, causing many family-owned restaurants and businesses to struggle. I urge you to think about how much of an impact your order will have on the restaurant before you order. Stay local and avoid chains!
There are many great, small restaurant options in Fargo as well. Here are some small restaurants that you can try out: The Shack, which is a small local diner located on 3215 Broadway N, Blackbird Woodfire, which serves pizza and appetizers and is located on 206 Broadway N, Mangoes, which serves many variations of Mexican food located on 2901 Main Ave, and lastly, Jade Dragon, which serves Vietnamese and Chinese style food and is located on 1015 Main Ave.
People might say that because we’re not allowed to leave our houses, it’s not safe to order food. However, according to Purdue University’s Department of Food Science, COVID-19 is not foodborne or food transmitted. Therefore, there’s no need to worry about getting the illness from food. Plus, with the no contact delivery, there’s no need to worry about getting it from another person. Doing this can help many high quality, small restaurants from going under. They shouldn’t have to worry about closing because of COVID-19. Please try to support local businesses during this time! You may not realize it, but buying one meal once in a while could be saving someone from losing their career.
