Pet of the Month- Ecocolumns
This month’s Pet of the Month will be the ecocolumn fish and plants managed by Ingrid Lean, Haylee Kenowski, Bella Munro, and myself (Samantha Jackson) for our AP Environmental Science class. As part of our research on living systems, we assembled a plant, filter, and aquatic chamber all put together to create our own mini ecosystems. Our largest plants thus far are our radishes, which were the first to begin growing from the start. They are already about 13-14cm tall- they grow up so fast :,). We also have small sprouts of tomato plants as well as a couple of carrots beginning to blossom in our top plant column. There should also be three rolly polly bugs and two worms somewhere in our plant column, though those have been MIA for about a month now. The fish have been doing swimmingly so far. Ingrid decided she would like to name them Rupaul and Drag Race, after one of our favorite shows. Our fish’s favorite activities include FEASTING on alodia plants that we supply them, moving around rocks we added to the bottom of their tank, and staring off at nowhere questioning their lives. To show affection to our fish babies, I often try to feed them alodia plants by using a little syringe and pushing the plants towards our little fishes. I’m hoping our minnows live very long and happy lives and if you’re ever in room 909, come say hello to little Rupaul and Drag Race!
