As the trees become bare and the seasons change, this may be the start of the average person’s seasonal depression, but to me, it’s the start of seasonal expression. The ideology I live, breathe, and sleep by is that the layering season is more exciting than the holiday season. Bundling up to protect yourself from the harsh temperatures broadens your outfit options immensely.
Depending on the temperature, you are able to upgrade your basic T-shirt and jeans outfit with a thermal long sleeve underneath. Though if the winds are a bit more aggressive, you may feel drawn to grab a coat out of your closet, but before doing so you will want to think about how this choice will add to your outfit.
A classic black trench coat is popular among middle aged women, but personally I think it should be more normalized in the youth today. Jean jackets are also seen often but rarely worn right, the key to rocking a denim jacket is to make sure it is worn in, whether it’s ripped, a light wash or oversized. Surprisingly this ragged look can make someone look more chic.
Another fashionable but practical accessory for the chillier days is a scarf. They’re more than neck warmers; they can be used to give your outfits an extra pop of color. Scarves come in many different shades, fabrics, weights, and knits, allowing for so much versatility. A lightweight scarf can even be worn going into the spring, while a chunkier scarf that your grandma might knit can be great to keep you warm and surprisingly snazzy if styled right.
However, one of the main body parts that people should be worried about keeping warm is the feet. Feet are known to be a central cooling and heating system of the body. What better way to protect your toes from the cold air than a boot? A staple in my closet is my pair of classic lace-up Dr. Martens, but an upgrade from this for extra temperature protection is purchasing the fur-lined boots instead. If Dr. Martens aren’t your style, though, there are many different brands, including UGGs if you’re going for the comfier and casual route, Sorel for the basic middle-aged woman aesthetic, and Blundstoons if you want to match your fellow ‘granola’ folk. Boots are very versatile, not only keeping your toes toasty but giving your outfit elevation.
So please bundle up, stay warm, and most importantly, stay fashionable. Until next month, sincerely, your self-appointed fashion pro
