Welcome to the second edition of Doughnut Astrology! My name is Jay and I believe doughnuts make the world go ‘round. In the last edition, we discussed the origins of the classic ring-shaped cake doughnut and what it says about you if that is your doughnut of choice. But what if you prefer a little more color on your doughnuts? In this edition, we’ll discuss those of you who choose to have a doughnut with rainbow sprinkles and see what that might reveal about you.
There are many stories about when and where sprinkles were invented. Some say they came from France, others say they came from the Netherlands or even the United States, but we know they’ve been around since at least the eighteenth century, if not earlier than that. So with an origin as mysterious as this one, how do we determine what the underlying implications are of someone choosing to have rainbow sprinkles on their doughnuts?
Sprinkles are an odd topping for desserts as they don’t typically add a lot of flavor. They might add a bit of a satisfying crunch, but sprinkles are added for the aesthetic appeal, not because they enhance the taste experience in any meaningful way. This is also paired with the fact that when it comes to doughnuts, sprinkles usually aren’t the only topping to be used. They’re often put on top of a frosting, glaze, or other sugary coating that’s being used as the flavor profile for the doughnut.
The aesthetic that sprinkles add is an inherently messy one. It isn’t a neatly designed drizzle, it’s a bunch of random colored, crumb-sized, sugar sticks that are dropped on top with no real method for how it should look. Every rainbow sprinkles doughnut is unique. This isn’t a bad thing at all, this is one of their selling points. Sometimes people don’t want or need something perfect; when you finish a hard day and want to kick back your legs with something sweet, imperfection is exactly what you’re looking for. They subtly remind people that you don’t have to be perfect to be as good as anyone else. You can be a colorful, cheerful, beautiful mess and make people twice as happy as someone who simply has a symmetric design.
People who choose to have rainbow sprinkles on their doughnuts are kind, one-of-a-kind, and aren’t afraid to be a little messy. They want to be a beacon of joy in a sometimes dim world and work with other people’s strengths instead of relying solely on their own. They love attention but are happy to share the spotlight with others who deserve it as well. The French painter Paul Cézanne once said, “We live in a rainbow of chaos.” I think this sums up rainbow sprinkles doughnuts, and those who choose them, to a T.
Thank you for reading the second edition of Doughnut Astrology! In the future I’ll talk about maple bars, Boston cream-filled, and more so make sure to read those articles when they come out! Remember, doughnuts might be a dozen apiece, but you’re one of a kind.
