What is the best method to stay awake throughout the day in every single one of your classes? Certainly, it should be to get a decent amount of sleep, but you would be wrong there. The most popular method among students to get through school without crashing out would be to pump their veins full of stimulating beverages.
Surely, there has to be a drink that can be considered the best and most effective – and I am going to find out through the power of journalism. Do not, under any circumstance, try this at home.
I have gone out of my way to purchase a variety of energy drinks and caffeinated beverages to get to the bottom of this mystery. I am already well-acquainted with the basics like Redbull and Monster, the top dogs of the energy drink industry that everybody should already know. I become close friends with a case of Redbull after I procrastinate on writing an essay and do it the night before, and that usually works. Sometimes.
Some people may think Redbull would be the energy drink that would give you the most bang for your buck, but that would be wrong– the caffeine level is low compared to most other energy drinks. So why drink it if it won’t get my heart pumping?
I didn’t even know many of these energy drinks existed, so actively trying them all was fun (unsafe). I may have consumed multiple drinks in one day occasionally, but most of them were consumed quickly. Not the best decision I have made. It’s not going to be the worst decision, though.
The first energy drink I need to discuss is the iconic Monster Energy, which has been a popular drink since the early 2000s but recently gained traction during the 2020 TikTok era among the new wave of alternative adolescents. Monster has gone through a crazy number of flavors over the years – most of them are discontinued now – but the total count is over 70 over the years. What makes Monster so popular is how it tastes like syrupy, sugary battery acid that will definitely wake you up in a morning class when served cold. However, as good as it sounds, the high amount of sugar content is crazy and not worth it. I want to keep all of my teeth in my mouth.
I tried an Alani for the first time for this article and was pleasantly surprised by it. I expected it to taste like a Bubblr (not the biggest fan) but it tastes more like a mellow Red Bull with 2.5 times the caffeine content. Each 12-ounce can contains about 200mg of caffeine, which is a lot. In fact, it’s half of the maximum a full-grown adult should ever consume within a 24-hour period. Alani kept me awake and conscious, and tasted good going down the hatch – which is a plus.
Prime is a somewhat popular drink, new too, as it was released in 2022 by Logan Paul. I feel like this drink is more popular among people who only drink it because it’s made by Paul. It isn’t that good, and I do believe that they are facing lawsuits due to the excessive amount of caffeine in the drinks.
Celsius is another drink that has become more popular within the last couple of years, my personal favorite being the Peach Vibes flavor. This drink is similar to Alani in that they both are 12 oz of yummy drink that contain 200mg of must-have caffeine. There aren’t a whole lot of flavors I actually enjoy from Celsius – I only drink them for the caffeine. The brand is experiencing a lawsuit due to “mislabeling” and leading their customers to believe that they can “accelerate metabolism,” “burn body-fat,” “promote weight loss,” and “reduce hunger,” according to the 23-page class action lawsuit. I heard that if you can prove you have purchased a Celcius, you may be able to get some money.
I will argue, though, that they do reduce hunger since that is a common side effect of caffeine consumption (not exactly a good thing).
Rockstar is a classic of energy drinks, part of the top 3 of energy drinks along with Redbull and Monster. The original flavor of this drink is not very good, but most flavors aren’t that good in general. It’s pretty similar to Monster in caffeine content, so it’s an even tie there. Rockstar tastes like it’s probably only popular among middle-aged gamers and construction workers, so use that information however you feel. The drinks come in a variety of flavors, but they all have the same base taste of battery acid and taurine with a slight mix of either fruit punch or whatever flavor you decide to grab.
A couple other energy drinks are maybe lesser known like Full Throttle, C4, and Ghost. Full Throttle is branded like the quintessential American energy drink with that weird looking eagle on the can and 160mg of caffeine. C4 is the energy drink that has those funky candy flavors like Jolly Rancher or Starburst, and they actually don’t taste that bad despite a whopping 200mg caffeine content. Ghost is probably one of my least favorite energy drinks that I have consumed – every flavor is just so icky. When I went to the store, the only one they had was a ‘Warhead sour green apple’ flavor. It was so gross I had to pass it off to a friend so it wouldn’t go to waste.
So, after all that yapping, must you know what energy drink is the best to consume over all the others? The answer is: absolutely none of them. Drinking energy drinks will eventually kill you – myself included. A study done by the National Institutes of Health, recorded that energy drinks have various effects like, “anxiety, gastrointestinal disturbances, dehydration, nervousness, and tachycardia, along with more severe outcomes like rhabdomyolysis, acute kidney injury (AKI), ventricular fibrillation, seizures, acute mania, and stroke.”
They’ll also lead to kidney stones if energy drinks are your main source of nutrition, a good friend of mine can confirm that fact after consuming one too many Monsters and a protein source of Hot Cheetos. My heart is probably one six hour energy drink binge from cardiac arrest and going into a permanent coma. I love how North enables my caffeine addiction with cheap Monsters, but they draw the line at sugary drinks.
