Over the past few weeks, I was given the opportunity to watch the show titled 13 Reasons Why. Disclaimer: I did not like this show. However, I know many people love it and I am trying make this review as controversy-free as possible.
Reason one: It glorifies suicide. When Hannah dies, (spoiler alert,) all of the attention is drawn to her. Of course, when a person dies, they will gain a lot of attention. However, this shows suicide as an option for teens to gain the attention we all crave. Reason two: It portrays unnecessary violence. For a show aimed towards teens, there is a lot of unnecessary violence in every episode. Seriously, this show is messed up. I have spent hours contemplating the purpose of this show, and I cannot find one. This show gives us things that we do not need to see. Reason three: It does not show what high school is really like. Most tv shows about a high school make the school look super fun and chill. Liberty High, however, is shown as a horrible place with assaults and shootings way too often. If the directors want to represent the issues of high school, they should not pile it on so heavy, as that makes the show seem unrealistic to our real schools. Reason four: Seasons are dragged on. (think Grey’s Anatomy.) The producers of the show could have finished it off with one season. Not to disrespect the dead, but after she died, there was not much left to happen other than everyone feeling bad for what they did to her. But no, they need to add assaults and murders into the mix for some pizazz. This resembles the hit show Grey’s Anatomy, which is starting its sixteenth season at the end of September. The first few seasons of Grey’s were nice and intriguing, at least until they start throwing in employee affairs and then kill those same employees. This is what 13 Reasons Why is starting to do, as seen with all the drama being thrown in the new season.
Reason five: 20,713,457,592 things happen in every episode. We all know those shows that are just filled with random events. 13 Reasons Why is definitely one of these shows. There is always something crazy or dramatic happening, giving the audience no time to comprehend what has happened throughout the episode.
Reason six: Good characters eventually become irrelevant. There are a lot of main characters, many of whom are likeable. These people were essential to the story in the first two seasons, but now are not even seen in the hallways in season three. We do not even get an explanation as to where they have gone. Reason seven: The show itself profits from this horrible topic. 13 Reasons Why is a Netflix original, which means Netflix is making bank. So many people of all ages are binging this show, some people even watch it more than once. This may not seem bad at all, but remember what the show is about and what it has caused. Teens everywhere are dealing with horrible thoughts from this show, while Netflix is out here rolling it in. That is not good.
Reason eight: Most characters are bad influences. In this show, there are really no “good” characters. Every person has done something horrible, some worse than others. Most of the people in the show are people whom you would not want to look up to.
Reason nine: I fell asleep in the middle of an episode. Shows are supposed to, at the very least, keep you awake, correct? This show does not do a very good job with that. There is always something going on, but that makes it boring. Having to constantly be comprehending events makes it hard to pay attention to the little things in the show.
Reason ten: Teen suicide rates grew after the show’s release. This reason right here is straight facts, not just my opinion. How are we enjoying and supporting a show that makes people kill themselves? Netflix tries to help by adding the “Behind the Reasons” segment, but they cannot undo the damage they have done. Reason eleven: It is 39 hours you will never get back. During the binging of this show, I had tons of fellow peers hitting my line and wanting me to hang with them. I don’t even remember how many times I had to say “Sorry I can’t, I need to finish my show.” It is sad to look back at all the lit parties I missed due to watching this show.
Reason twelve: Doctors strongly recommend that people suffering from depression do not watch. If you have depression, do not go anywhere near this show. Real certified medical doctors have expressed to the public that this show is not recommended for anybody suffering from depression. Reason thirteen: You should probably be doing homework or something. Whenever I wasn’t getting invited to parties, there was tons of homework that needed to be completed. This show was honestly just a waste of time, when I could be doing more productive things with my life.
As hopefully read above, I did not like this show. There were so many things wrong with it that I could not bring myself to complete the series. You will definitely not find me binging season four.
