Good-whatever-time-it-is-when-you-are-reading- this is a new restaurant review that was a blast to do! I wanted to do something a bit different, go a little outside of my comfort zone, and try new things.
I was venturing up in north Fargo on my way to the Dollar Tree near 32nd Ave, and I saw that a new business had moved into the Fish and Chicken Shack building after their closing a few years ago. Naturally, I got curious and googled what new business moved in and saw it was a Caribbean restaurant.
Fargo might not be the first place you’d expect to find any sort of Caribbean food, but Tropical Spice Caribbean Cuisine is proving that non-European flavors can happen even in North Dakota. This small, welcoming restaurant brings the warmth of the Caribbean not just through its flavorful dishes but also in its friendly service and laid-back atmosphere.
On my visit, I wanted to try a mix of classic comfort food and traditional island flavors, so I ordered coconut shrimp with mac and cheese and candied yams, while my dining partner opted for the jerk chicken with steamed cabbage and mac and cheese.
Starting with the coconut shrimp, I was immediately impressed by the sauce that coated the shrimp dish. The shrimp itself was plump and tender, and the coconut crust added a slightly sweet, tropical crunch. The balance of flavors with the sauce and crust was just right – sweet but not overpowering, with a nice crispiness in every bite. Underneath the shrimp though was a pleasant surprise of rice and beans – a simple combo but one of my favorite foods to eat.
The mac and cheese was a creamy, cheesy delight. The noodles were cooked perfectly, and the cheese sauce was rich and comforting without being overly heavy. It had that homemade feel, which is always a plus. The candied yams were another highlight, offering a deep caramelized sweetness that paired beautifully with the creamy mac and cheese. They were soft and buttery, with just the right amount of spice to enhance their natural flavor.
Then came the jerk chicken, which was undoubtedly the star of the meal. This dish is a staple of Caribbean cuisine, and Tropical Spice did not disappoint. The seasoning was bold and smoky, with the perfect level of heat that built up with each bite without becoming overwhelming. The chicken was juicy, tender, and had that delicious charred exterior that makes jerk chicken so irresistible.
For sides, the steamed cabbage provided a nice contrast to the spiciness of the jerk chicken. It was simple, lightly seasoned, and had a subtle buttery taste that complemented the richness of the rest of the meal. And of course, the mac and cheese made another appearance – because who can resist an extra serving of cheesy goodness? I wish I got an extra side of mac and cheese.
Portion sizes were generous, making it well worth the price. The service was friendly and welcoming, with staff members eager to explain the menu and recommend dishes to first-time visitors. The restaurant itself had a cozy and casual feel, making it a great place for a relaxed meal.
Unfortunately, the fryer wasn’t working so some foods weren’t available, but when it gets fixed I hope to try those foods!
Tropical Spice Caribbean Cuisine is a fantastic addition to Fargo’s food scene, offering something different from the usual fare. Whether you’re craving a taste of home or simply want to explore new flavors, this restaurant delivers on all fronts. The food is rich, flavorful, and made with care, ensuring a memorable dining experience.
I’ll definitely be returning to try more dishes – perhaps their oxtail or curry goat next time.
