When you walk into Tacos Trompo, you already have a sense of authentic Mexican food. Whether it’s the music, the immersive smells, disco lights, or the friendly smiles behind the counter, the hard work is evident. The owner has the goal of bringing Mexico City-style street food to our midwestern town. They have been succeeding at this since opening in 2017. To say the food was impressive is an understatement.
The first thing you see when you approach the counter is the vast menu with options for everyone. Of course, at any Mexican restaurant, you would expect the classic choices, including tacos, enchiladas, and burritos. However, in addition to these quintessential foods, Tacos Trompo also offers original cuisine from the birthplace of this delicious food and a kids’ menu for the youngins out there! These unique Mexican meals, Chilaquiles, Alambres, and Tortas, are some dishes you’ve probably never heard of.
Chilaquiles consist of fried corn tortilla chips, simmered in red or green salsa, depending on personal preference. Alambres contain grilled meat and vegetables, usually served with cheese and tortillas to complement the dish. A torta, perhaps the most superb item to order, is a Mexican sandwich! This menu furthermore plaudits the traditional fare of Mexico with various sides like refried beans, elotes, rice, fruit, and chips & salsa. This entire list of amazing nourishment to the tummy and soul is also extremely affordable. Who knew anyone could eat so good for around $10?
The most outstanding thing that we ordered was the Cancun Torta, which had chicken, ham, chihuahua cheese, pinto refried beans, mayo, lettuce, tomato, onion, and avocado. A torta, when looking at it, is similar to a sandwich in that it is served on a telera roll. The roll was incredibly squishy but did a great job of holding the torta together.
Taking a bite was a very different experience than expected. Looking at it, you would not expect it to be as flavorful as it was. The chicken in the torta surprisingly meshed very well with the sliced ham, as well as the avocado and mayo, which complemented each other beautifully. This option on the menu is exactly what the restaurant stands for, introducing things that the Americanized Mexican cuisine does not offer. This meal is a 10/10 recommendation at the price of $8.90.
Another popular food across all households that you can order at Tacos Trompos is the amazing tacos and enchiladas. Tacos in almost all of America only consist of beef or chicken with cheese and taco sauce…but these tacos are special. We gorged ourselves on the steak tacos, which are topped with lettuce, cheese, and onion. After squeezing the perfectly sized slice of lime onto your taco, you might want to dunk a bite into the thin but mouthwatering salsa.
This salsa is the utterly flawless combination of spice and tomato, ideal for any food dipping your heart desires. As much as the tacos were astonishing, the enchiladas were nothing short of a bewildering taste. On the inside of the cooked tortilla, lay a suitable amount of chicken and cheese, which are simple enough to make sure this dish is not overwhelming. Warm and soothing, the enchiladas are a great choice for all customers looking for a classic.
These main courses have been delicious, but the sides were a different story. When ordering the enchiladas, they come with a side of Mexican rice and refried pinto or black beans. While taking a bite of the rice, it was not as flavorful as one would expect, especially since the main course was so delectable. The rice was undercooked, which was amplified by the rice tasting more like white rice than Mexican rice
Now with the beans, the consistency was very smooth, and the cheese topping was a yummy touch. But similar to the rice, it lacked flavor. Luckily, the leftover red sauce from the tacos could be mixed in, which gave it the flavor it deserved.
So despite the lack of flavor from the side dishes, the experience was very enjoyable. With the new experience of tortas, affordable prices, exploding flavors from entrees, and fun lighting, this place is highly recommended. Tacos Trompo is a phenomenal representation of immersing people’s palettes through new experiences.
