With the recent release of over three million pages of investigative files, the Epstein saga has entered a new volatile chapter. These documents, intended to provide closure, have instead caused many existing theories on Epstein and new ones to sprout up. In the online landscape it becomes harder to separate fact from theory, and the truth is often as allusive as it is disturbing. With many government mishandlings in regards to the release of new information on Epstein as well as a lack of consequence for the alleged perpetrators, it is no wonder that many have come to question the truthfulness behind new releases—and the question is, are they onto something?
The implementation of the Epstein Files Transparency Act has been widely categorized as a failure due to missed deadlines, massive document gaps, and a chaotic release process. Although the law mandated a full disclosure by late 2025, the Justice Department initially released only a small fraction of the records, blowing past congressionally mandated deadlines and leaving millions of pages-nearly half of the identified trove unaccounted for. Many people think that the files were handled deficiently. Junior Ella Stollenwek said, “I don’t think it was handled good at all, I think they should’ve published it a long time ago, I feel like it was put on the back burner. I feel like it should’ve been a big story or kinda a main focus.”
Critics, Ro Khanna, and Thomas Massie argue that blanket redactions–a form of data masking where vast, sweeping amounts of information are removed from a document rather than selectively obscuring only the necessary sensitive details–were used to shield high profile associates and specific political figures while simultaneously failing to protect the privacy of victims, some of whose identities were accidentally exposed.
Significant portions of the Epstein files, including grand jury and crucial financial documents, were entirely withheld or heavily blacked out. The official search engine for the unsealed Epstein files has been widely criticized for malfunctioning and technical limitations that make navigating the documents difficult. Many users that use standard searches initially returned zero results or yielded “unreliable” outcomes due to the format of the materials. Because many documents are released as image-only PDF files or contain handwritten notes, they often lack a searchable text layer, requiring extensive manual review or the use of external tools. Due to all of these malfunctions, names and birth dates were disclosed and uncensored, and many victims were left unprotected by the release of sensitive information.
The use of so much redacting has had the added effect of leading a lot more people to become more conspiratorial. “It makes us look really bad especially as in other countries their leaders named in the files were handled and our president was named in the files more times than Jesus in the Bible and has faced no repercussions,” said one North student who wished to remain anonymous.
With all this lack of clarity regarding the publishing of these documents, it’s no wonder why so many conspiracy theories and misinformation have sprouted up. According to Reuters 69% of Americans agree with the statement that “ The Epstein files show that powerful people in the U.S. are rarely held accountable for their actions.” One older conspiracy that has resurfaced is the popular theory that Epstein’s death was not a suicide. Another older conspiracy regarding Epstein leans more into the supernatural, linking the sex trafficking scandal to a demonic entity. These theories surrounding Epstein, while understandable given the lack of transparency, are extremely dangerous. The Epstein story has been used as a lynch pin for Pizza Gate and other QAnon conspiracy theories.
Many of these cited theories are rooted in historical antisemitic tropes, gaining fresh momentum through right-leaning figures like Alex Jones and Joe Rogan. Their reach is amplified by modern platforms like X, YouTube, and TikTok, which allow these narratives to circulate more freely than ever before. The digital resurgence directly fuels the conspiratorial frenzy surrounding Epstein; by framing his actions through the lens of ‘globalist’ or ‘cabal’ archetypes, these influences repackage old prejudices for a modern audience, often obscuring the factual reality of his crimes in favor of more sensationalist, ideologically driven agendas.
Not only have old and wild conspiracies resurfaced, but new ones have sprouted. Some of which circulate the halls of Fargo North. “Like the Palm Beach Pete guy in Florida, all this stuff about the war was happening and he had to move or something (In reference to Epstein). He’s involved in Middle East affairs,” said anonymous student two. This theory revolving around Palm Beach Pete has taken shape on TikTok, as well as many other conspiracy theories. Many TikTok users have theorized that Epstein and a look alike in Palm Beach, Florida, are actually the same person. TikTokers post side-by-side comparisons of Pete and Epstein, claiming their facial features and childhood school photos match perfectly. A few “body language experts” on TikTok have compared Pete’s speech patterns and gestures to old footage of Epstein to suggest they are the same person.
However, much cited evidence is rather circumstantial and not really concrete evidence pointing to any particular conclusion. Not to mention, that the “body language experts” as a practice are highly contested as unreliable. But despite the validity of the theory being questionable, the mass hysteria and panic caused by it are evident. Palm Beach Pete has explicitly denied these theories, stating, “I’m not Jeffrey Epstein” and emphasizing that he is simply a Florida resident caught in a viral frenzy. He has used his own social media presence, including the handle @not_jeffepstein, to address the rumors and set the record straight. Not only is this theory harmful to Pete, but also harmful to the victims as turmoil is directed at someone who has no definitive ties to the case rather than those closely related.
This is an ever-present phenomenon of mob mentality however, is unfortunately not unique on TikTok. Scientific and medical misinformation being popularized on the platform, at a rate of 44%. TikTok is also notoriously bad at regulating false information on its platform. This coupled with 1 in 5 Americans getting their news from TikTok, creates an echo chamber for the loudest yelled conspiracies. Many different wild conspiracies are formed through TikTok and social media, in which many people believe based on the first things they see without double checking the important information.
This acts as a catalyst for the collective suspicion, online radicalization, and the erosion of trust in public institutions. The Epstein case provides a factual toehold that allows speculative narratives to spread rapidly, creating a mob that demands accountability while simultaneously amplifying misinformation.
Though most people are more willing to believe in the Palm Beach Pete theory, there are some theories out there regarding Jeffrey Epstein’s involvement in Israel and the Middle East often allege he was a “co-opted” asset of Israeli intelligence (Mossad) tasked with running a sexual blackmail ring to influence high-ranking global officials. While some theories are fueled by his Jewish heritage, they are predominantly based on his deep, documented, and often secretive connections to Israeli politicians and intelligence-linked figures, rather than just his appearance.
These claims have gained significant traction following the release of millions of Department of Justice files in early 2026, which revealed extensive ties between Epstein and high-ranking Israeli figures.
Related to the Epstein Files, there was a “bad” release of this information as well with the chaotic and partisan manner in which the U.S. The Department of Justice and various political leaders handled the disclosures. The ‘bad’ or unofficial release came from hackers, who leaked private correspondence that had been previously ignored by major media outlets. Despite the release of millions of pages under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, large portions remain redacted, leading to the accusations that the full extent of the “honeytrap” or blackmail operations is still being hidden.
One thing has been proven by the conspiracy theories surrounding the Jeffrey Epstein case is that the people are deeply unsatisfied with the official answers and consequences provided by the government. In times of profound uncertainty, there is a natural human impulse to fill in the gaps where transparency is lacking. While this response is understandable, it is imperative that people use discernment when gathering information. In our ever evolving technological landscape it feels harder and harder to pick out the right people to listen to. And with all sides of the aisle feeling less than confident in our institutions, we have to commit ourselves to the reality of the truth.
